FAIRY TALE by Miren E.(DBH 2)

Once upon a time, in a land of the north where the days were short and the nights were long, there lived a king who would listen to no-one but his counsellor. The king had no children, and his wife had died long ago. The king was kind, and thought that the counsellor was a good man, for he thought that everyone was good. But the counsellor was really a wicked man, and planned to become the king himself.

One day, the king called the counsellor to him. ‘Wisest counsellor’ he began. ‘There is something I must tell you. It is not true that I have no children. Many years ago, we had a beautiful daughter. But when she was a baby, she was cruelly stolen from us, and we have never seen her again. Soon I will die, and she must be queen. You must find her for me. Find her now!’

The counsellor, named Jack, accepted, but he put a condition. ‘If I find your daughter, I want a reward,’ said the counsellor. ‘Yes, of course, if you find my daughter, I gave you, like a reward, half of my gold,’ replied the king. ‘Oh, that is an interesting option, but, I don’t want your gold, I want your daughter,’ said Jack.

The king accepted because he thought that Jack was brave and intelligent and that he could be a good king. So, next day, Jack went out of the castle to rescue the daughter of the king.

Some days went by and Jack found a bright forest; fairies and dwarfs were living there. He asked to the intelligent fairy: ‘Do you know about a beautiful girl? The daughter of the king of the north castle?’ and the fairy replied: ‘Oh, yes, she is a nice girl but she is living with a horrible witch.’

So, Jack went with a dwarf to rescue the girl. When they arrived at the house of the witch they knocked at the door and an ugly witch opened the door.

The witch was angry and before he said something she froze Jack and the dwarf.

So nobody went to the castle with the daughter of the king and a couple of months later the king died.

As he had no successor the castle got empty.

  1. Thank you for your original story, Miren. We usually expect happy endings in fairy stories, but this is different. It has an unconfortable ending. Well done!
