Selectivity exam June 2007

FAIRY STORY by Jon Z. (DBH2)

Once upon a time, in a land of the north where the days were short and the nights were long, there lived a king who would listen to no-one but his counsellor. The king had no children, and his wife had died long ago. The king was kind, and thought that the counsellor was a good man, for he thought that everyone was good. But the counsellor was really a wicked man, and planned to become the king himself.

One day, the king called the counsellor to him. ‘Wisest counsellor’ he began. ‘There is something I must tell you. It is not true that I have no children. Many years ago, we had a beautiful daughter. But when she was a baby, she was cruelly stolen from us, and we have never seen her again. Soon I will die, and she must be queen. You must find her for me. Find her now!’

The counsellor was a wicked man, for this reason the counsellor didn’t go to rescue the daughter. Meanwhile the king was dying. But two days later the king told his slaves to look for the counsellor. The slaves found the counsellor and they ordered him to follow looking for his daughter. Then he accepted and he began to look for the daughter. But the daughter was in one castle and the counsellor had big problems. However, he passed the problems and he rescued the daughter.

Next day the counsellor arrived at the kings’ castle to take the daughter to the king. But just then the slaves announced to him that the king was dead.

When the daughter was 10 years old she was crowned. From then on the counsellor was a rich man and a very good person. They lived happily and they celebrated the funeral of the king.

LOVE STORY by Irune R. (DBH2)

The truth is never easy to tell, especially when it concerns matters of the heart. But I’ll tell you my story anyway. It all began when I was a kid, back at Primary school. I noticed her on the first day, and I guess she noticed me too. We were both seven but she was the first girl I kissed. We used to play at her house, every weekend. I wasn’t interested in anybody, or anything else. She was my life.

And then, three months later, she said that her family was moving to Australia. I said ´Oh that’s OK. I’ll visit you; but she told me that it was thousands of miles away, and that she wouldn’t be coming back. Then once she had really gone, I had to accept that I would never see her again.

When I was 18 years old I went to the university of Australia . When I arrived at my apartment, I saw a very nice girl, I fell in love at first sight. I asked her name and I invited her out. She accepted immediately. That night, I stayed with Ana. When we finished the dinner, I asked about her life and she said: “At primary, school when I was a kid, it was the first time that I fell in love. I fell in love with one boy that was very handsome”.

In that moment I kissed her and I said that the boy that she loved was me. Next morning I went to her apartment but I didn’t find her.

I went to the last floor and I committed suicide.

HORROR STORY by Tomas I. (DBH2)

He had heard that the mountain was haunted, but he didn’t care. That summer night, the moon was full as he knocked the last peg into the ropes that secured his small, one-man tent. He was up there alone, on the summit of Ben McDhui, an isolated peak in the Cairngorm Mountains of Scotland. He enjoyed being alone. He could think about things, make plans, relax.

Then suddenly he heard the noise. At first he thought it might be another mountaineer, another loner, up there on the summit like him. But then when he heard the noise again, he realised that he was mistaken. No man could produce the noise that he had just heard…

The man went outside and he saw a lot of zombies, and they took him away, to their cave. There he remembered that he had one bazooka in his bag, but the bag was in his tent and he was in the zombies' cave.

He went out running and one million zombies followed him. When he arrived at his tent he took the bag and he took the bazooka and he shot the zombies and killed all of them. He slept and he went home.

He turned on the lantern and he saw a big leg. Then, he looked up and he saw a very big dragon. He went running and he crashed into one big tree. Ten minutes later he went back and he saw everything broken but the big dragon didn’t appear. He grabbed his backpack and he went very frightened to his house.

From then on he didn’t go to any haunted mountain or place.

HISTORIANS

Our DBH2 students are going to become historians in the unit we have just started. We will not be looking at History (with a capital letter), but at the history of everyday life. How has lifestyle changed along history? Our students will be comparing the 1300s, the 1900s and the 2000s. Did toothbrushes exist in the Middle Ages? When was the typewriter invented? How did medieval people manage without toilet rolls? Did you know that glasses did exist in the middle ages? This is only the beginning of a more thorough analysis of the history of everyday life.

We are going to wear purple, what about you?

Anything purple in your wardrobe? A bracelet? A scarf? A pair of trousers? Join us in this celebration of Women's International Day by wearing something purple and enjoy the activities that some students have been preparing for us all.

POCKET MONEY

Hi! Today, one of the tasks some Batxilergo students had to do was related to teenagers and pocket money. Do you get regular pocket money? Weekly? Monthly? Only when necessary? What's the best? Do you have problems to make ends meet? Do you do any chores (or housework) for that pocket money or allowance? Or do you think your parents shouldn't expect you to do any chores apart from studying?
